A breath of courtly delight from Rococo Dresden, music for two flutes and basso continuo.
The sonatas on this CD were written in the 1730s and 1740s by the elite musicians who were working in Dresden at that time:
Johann Adolf Hasse, the Court Director of Music Pierre Gabriel Buffardin, the virtuoso French flautist Johann Joachim Quantz, his pupil, later teacher of Frederick the Great Johann Friedemann Bach, organist at St. Sophia in Dresden
These trendsetters were developing the new "galant" style, a graceful and entertaining approach to music in which the technical skills of these superb musicians were harnessed to create delightful entertainment music of the highest quality for the enjoyment of Augustus II, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, their friends and families, and themselves. These pieces are a joy to play, and the Rare Roses are pleased to make them available for you to hear, played by the international band:
Cécile Blumenbär, flute (Stuttgart - Dresden) Daisuke Morota, flute (Tokyo - Dresden) Noémi Chenu, cello (Paris - Austin - Dresden) Chris Rowson, harpsichord (London - Dresden)
Recorded in Dresden in 2006, in the 800th anniversary year of the city 61 minutes
